Competing at Kennel Club licensed agility shows (Dec.2024)

Key points:

  • In order to compete at a Kennel Club licensed agility event, your dog must be registered with the Kennel Club.

  • There are two registers – the Breed Register and the Activity Register.

  • The Breed Register is for pedigree dogs. The breeder registers the puppies on the Breed Register and gives the Registration Information Document to the new owner as part of the puppy pack. Only the breeder can register pedigree puppies on the Breed Register.

  • If your dog is on the Breed Register, s/he is eligible to compete in activities and you do not need to register him/her on the Activity Register.

  • All other dogs, including pedigrees who are not on the Breed Register and cross breeds need to be registered on the Activity Register to take part in Kennel Club licensed events.

  • There is only one Activity Register for dogs who compete at agility, flyball, heelwork to music and obedience

How to register your dog on the Kennel Club Activity Register

  1. You will need Form 5 – Registration of a dog on the Activity Register. You can print this from the Kennel Club website at this URL: https://www.thekennelclub.org.uk/shop/registrations/form-5-activityregistration/ The form includes guidance notes on how to complete it and a check list. The section on choosing your dog’s registration name is particularly detailed and helpful.

  2. Complete the form. You will need to provide:

    1. Your name, address and contact details.

    2. Your dog’s name, breed, date of birth if you know it, gender, coat colour and microchip number. The dog’s name needs to be the name you want him/her to be known by in competition and not his/her pet name. The dog’s name needs to be unique to him/her and you will be asked for two names in case your first choice is already taken. If both of your choices are already taken, your application will be returned to you, and you will be asked for alternatives.

  3. You can complete the form online or you can send the form, together with the fee to the Kennel Club. The address is on the form. You can pay by card or cheque. Currently the fee is £20.00 The Kennel Club will check and process your application and if successful, will enter your dog’s details onto the Activity Register and send you an Activity Registration Certificate. What next?

When you have your dog’s Registration Number, you will need to buy a copy of the Kennel Club Agility Record Book for your dog and to get your dog measured.

Getting your dog measured

You can get your dog measured at most Kennel Club licensed shows. Measuring must be done by two people qualified to do so and follow strict rules laid down by the Kennel Club:

  • Your dog must be at least 15 months old before his/her first measurement.

  • You must have your dog’s Kennel Club Agility Record Book so that the measurement may be entered.

  • If your dog measures small or medium, s/he must be measured again between 12 and 24 months after the first measurement. If the 2nd measure is different to the first then they will require a 3rd measure.

  • Your dog must be measured before s/he competes in his/her first show. Measuring is usually offered at lunchtime so its best to go to a show prior to entering to get measured. Sometimes you can get your dog measured at a show you are entered in, in the morning usually around 7.30am but this needs to be arranged prior to entering.

  • The measurement fee is £5-£7.

  • From January 2025 ALL heights including large will need to have a measure before they compete.

  • The height categories are:

    • Large: For dogs measuring over 600mm at the withers.

    • Intermediate: For dogs measuring over 430mm and under 500mm at the withers

    • Medium: For dogs measuring over 350mm and 430mms or under at the withers.

    • Small: For dogs measuring 350mm or under at the withers.
